In this project I looked into the area of anonymity which explores the ideas of identity, secrecy and societal perceptions. I have captured a series of portraits where the subjects wear a balaclava with the aim to evoke a sense of intrigue which counters the preconceived notions of visibility. Each photograph aims to act as a window into understanding why through hiding a face alters the presentation of the photograph.
I additionally wanted to contradict the primary connotations of balaclavas being associated with crime and instead make it a symbol of the human condition and all the positive feelings one gets when one can express themselves in all the ways they would not feel comfortable with if their identity was exposed.
There is a universal longing for connection and understanding that transcends the barriers of visibility. The masks should be seen nothing more as a cosmetic in the photography, it should be a trigger for the audience to look beyond the balaclava and into the depth of the human soul.
